From bags to benches: how one primary school has saved over a tonne of soft plastics from landfill.
Primary school students from Merewether’s Holy Family have showcased their recycling efforts with the installation of bench seating made from 100% recycled plastic for the school playground.
Over the last two years, students, teachers and the school community have been collecting and recycling their soft plastics with Plastic Police®. So far, Holy Family have saved over one tonne of soft plastics from landfill. This is the equivalent of 250,000 plastic bags!
The school recently purchased bench seating made from recycled plastics, including soft plastics. The bench seats, made by Australian manufacturer Replas, are dotted around the school for students to enjoy.
Liesel Allen, parent and the school’s Plastic Police® Champion, said: “Plastic Police® has been a successful and popular initiative by our P&F. Our students and parents have enthusiastically embraced this program. The students love their new bench seats and they are a great physical reminder to always recycle your soft plastic or better still refuse them in the first place.”
Lexi Crouch, the Sustainability Project Coordinator at Plastic Police®, said: “Well done to Holy Family primary school on your recycling efforts and for educating the next generation of the importance of protecting our planet.”
